First of all, congratulations on getting the interview and taking your time to get ready. I know how much hard work and time it has taken to get to where you are at. It’s okay to be cautiously excited.
Interviews are stressful and for some of us, knowing what to wear will take a load off our shoulder so that we can focus on the important parts during interviews, like talking to students and faculty.
Before we get into the clothing that I recommend, my top advice is to make sure you are comfortable with what you are wearing. We all feel comfortable in different things. If you prefer wearing a dress, go for it! If you prefer wear pants, go for that!
In this post, I will talk about the things that I personally wore for my graduate school interviews, which made me feel the most comfortable. My best advice is to read this post and do what makes you feel YOUR BEST!
SO… Here’s a guide on things you can wear to look presentable and be comfortable for your interview. Here’s a list of items that I love and will recommend through and through.
Thermals
Firstly, take into consideration the weather. No matter what, I always pack a couple thermals with me. They help me stay warm, without the extra bulkiness of layering another shirt.
My favorite thermals are the Heattech ones from Uniqlo.
Blazer
I am recommending a blazer for a more professional look. I made sure that mine had pockets. I bought mine from H&M. Black would be the most flexible, but I saw people wear pink and beige blazers as well. If you prefer an even more casual look, a thick fitted cardigan could go well too.
Pants
Pants are much more comfortable than dresses to me, which is why I recommend pants. Find ones that are soft and stretchy because you will most likely be sitting down and walking throughout your interview day.
Dress shirt
If you choose a blazer, I think any shirt inside will be ok. You can choose a dress shirt or a blouse. Something bright would be great!
Shoes
Flats. Flats all the way. You will be walking and standing a lot, so I recommend you find some pair of comfortable flats that you can walk in. Make sure to wear them once or twice so that your feet don’t blister, but we are all busy. Just bring some bandages in case you don’t have time to break your shoes in. I found mine at target.
These are the top outfit items that I recommend for any graduate school interview. Whether they are in person or virtual, I recommend you to dress up because it sets the tone. Ultimately, be comfortable so that you can be your most authentic self! You got this, and good luck.
